What we offer

Litigation Support

Indigenous & Aboriginal law cases are arguably the most complex types of legal cases Canadian courts have ever seen. The scope of their evidence spans centuries. The length of their trials covers hundreds of days. Their results are potentially groundbreaking and history-making. But they need proper legal support to be successful.

We work exclusively with lawyers and law firms who run these cases, taking on whatever role the lead lawyers deem appropriate. We can stay in the background finding and managing numerous expert witnesses, assembling voluminous documentary records, and mapping out trial strategies including cross-examination questioning. Or we can be at the forefront as counsel of record, pressing government witnesses for answers, negotiating with government lawyers, and making submissions to the courts. It’s up to you how we help you.

Negotiations Support

Indigenous and Aboriginal treaty and rights negotiations may be the most complex of any type of negotiations anywhere in Canada. They can endure for decades. Their results involve nation-building and monetary values ranging up to above one billion dollars. But they need proper legal and factual support to be successful.

We work exclusively with lawyers and law firms who run these negotiations, taking on whatever role the lead lawyers deem appropriate. We can stay in the background arranging and managing studies, conducting complex financial calculations, and drafting agreement text. Or we can be at the forefront at the negotiating table as negotiators or table counsel, ensuring your clients receive the best deal possible. It’s up to you how we help you.

Opinions & Advice

Because so much of Indigenous and Aboriginal law in Canada is of a sui generis nature, it’s crucial to have up to knowledgeable advice that considers all potentialities and angles of legal issues prior to undertaking any action. Fundamental mistakes during litigation, negotiations or when establishing development deals can be very costly, where a modest investment in advice upfront can pay significant benefits later.

Education

We run virtual and in-person Indigenous and Aboriginal legal education programs for legal and other professionals, some of which might be accredited for law society continuing education credits. Watch our site for program announcements or enquire about custom course creation.
